The story behind the totals

How to compare Real Madrid and Barcelona's honours

A trophy comparison is most useful when the competitions are clear. La Liga measures performance across a league season; the Copa del Rey is a domestic knockout competition; and the European Cup, now the Champions League, brings together clubs from across Europe. A single overall total treats each title as one trophy, even though the formats, fields and routes to qualification differ.

Which trophies count here?

The totals above are the sum of the listed competitions for the men's first teams. They include historical tournaments such as the Latin Cup, Copa Eva Duarte and Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. Regional honours, friendly tournaments and trophies won by women's, youth or other sporting teams are outside this comparison. Other honours lists may use a broader or narrower definition, so their headline totals can differ.

European Cups, world titles and winning years

European Cup and Champions League victories are combined as the history of the same competition. The Fairs Cup is listed separately from the UEFA Cup because it was not organised by UEFA. The world-title category groups the original Intercontinental Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup. Years identify the winning season's end or the tournament edition; for example, the 2022 Club World Cup was played in February 2023.

A club's history is more than its trophy count

Madrid's early European Cup dominance and Barcelona's treble-winning teams are different chapters in a shared football history. Read the Real Madrid club history and FC Barcelona club history for that context, or explore the El Clásico head-to-head record to compare the clubs when they actually faced one another.
