What counts as an El Clásico goal?
The historical scoring table covers goals for Real Madrid or Barcelona in competitive meetings between the two men's first teams. League, domestic cup and European goals contribute to the total. Friendly goals and penalty-shootout kicks are outside this table. Appearances count matches in which a player took part, whether as a starter or a substitute.
Messi, Ronaldo and different career lengths
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo became central figures in the rivalry during their overlapping years in Spain, but their full Clásico careers are different samples. Comparing total goals shows cumulative contribution; goals per appearance gives another perspective but does not account for minutes played, role or the strength of the surrounding team. The competition columns help show where each player's goals came from.
Season goalscorers are a separate comparison
The season lists include goals against opponents across the named competitions, not just against the rival club. They use the available ESPN leader data and carry their own update date. Assists follow the provider's definition. Use the squad explorer for listed players and matchday line-ups, or the head-to-head archive for the team results behind the rivalry.
For club context, read about Real Madrid and La Fábrica or FC Barcelona and La Masia. The archive's counting rules explain competitive scope, friendlies and extra time.
