About Real Madrid

Real Madrid Club de Fútbol is a member-owned sports club based in Spain's capital, founded as Madrid Football Club on 6 March 1902. Its men's football team is known as Los Blancos, a reference to the white shirts that have become the club's most recognisable symbol. From the early European Cup teams of Alfredo Di Stéfano to later generations of international stars, Real Madrid's identity has been shaped by domestic ambition, European competition and a worldwide community of supporters known as madridistas.

From Madrid Football Club to European champions

The club received the royal title Real from King Alfonso XIII in 1920. Its international reputation grew dramatically in the 1950s under president Santiago Bernabéu, when a side featuring Alfredo Di Stéfano and Francisco Gento won the first five European Cups, from 1956 to 1960. Those victories established a lasting connection between Madrid and Europe's leading club competition. Later milestones include La Décima, the tenth European Cup in 2014, and three consecutive Champions League titles under Zinedine Zidane from 2016 to 2018.

The Santiago Bernabéu and madridista identity

Opened in 1947 as the Nuevo Chamartín, the stadium was renamed in honour of Santiago Bernabéu in 1955. It has been the setting for generations of league campaigns and European knockout nights, and its redevelopment has made it a landmark beyond matchdays. Real Madrid's supporters use Hala Madrid as a rallying cry. The club's member-owned structure also matters to its identity: members, known as socios, take part in club governance through its electoral and representative bodies.

La Fábrica and generations of players

Real Madrid's story combines major international signings with players developed through La Fábrica, the club's youth system. Raúl and Iker Casillas are among the academy graduates who became first-team leaders, while figures such as Ferenc Puskás, Zinedine Zidane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema helped define different eras. These teams did not all play the same way. What connects them is the expectation of competing for Spain's major honours and the European Cup, rather than one fixed tactical style.

Real Madrid's place in El Clásico

Meetings with FC Barcelona connect Real Madrid's own history to the wider story of Spanish football. The clubs first faced each other in 1902, before La Liga began, and their rivalry later extended across league fixtures, domestic cup ties and European knockout rounds. A Clásico result can influence a title race, but it is only one part of a club's season. This profile brings the rivalry record together with Madrid's broader match results, honours and squad so those different views can be explored in context.
